Andy Murray to donate Wimbledon prize money to victims of war in Ukraine, giving ‘extra motivation’ to succeed and help ‘kids in difficult situations’

Andy Murray has revealed he will donate Wimbledon prize money to victims of the war in Ukraine.

The two-time Grand Slam showpiece winner said it would provide him with “extra motivation” knowing his performance would translate into benefits for UNICEF.

Murray hopes as he progresses at Wimbledon his winnings can help him

The world No.51 will start his SW19 campaign on June 27 against Australian James Duckworth, with the winner of the competition taking home £2m in prize money.

Murray, 35, is far from successful after injuries marred the later stages of his tennis career but will ensure the benefits of any progress will help those under attack from Russia.

Explaining his decision, Murray said: “There are families and children trying to leave the country. There are also families whose homes are destroyed.

“For me, education was quite an important thing to try to help children who are in difficult situations.

“The destination of the money changes almost every week. I felt it was a good thing to do.

“It gives me a bit of extra motivation to try to perform well and win games. That’s why I decided to do it.”

The Briton also took the opportunity to praise those reporting on the atrocities in Ukraine, saying they had inspired him to want to help.

“I know that sometimes the media is abused by the public.

“But in this case, the news reports and everything I had seen, it was amazing the job they were doing.

“It makes you feel like you want to do something or do something to help.

“And it was the best thing I could do. That’s why I did it.
