| Today Headlines | World News

Cuomo, a Democrat who resigned his post in August after several women accused him of sexual harassment, is facing a misdemeanor charge in connection with an alleged incident at the governor’s mansion on December 7, 2020.

The complaint alleges that Cuomo “intentionally, and without a legitimate purpose, forcibly placed his hand under the victim’s blouse (redacted) and on her private part of the body” and that he touched the victim’s left breast “in the goal of degrading and satisfying his sexual desires. ”

The complaint was signed by Amy Kowalski, an investigator with the Albany Sheriff’s Office, on Monday and was filed Thursday. But in an early evening statement, Albany County District Attorney David Soares said the filing of the complaint caught him off guard.

“Like the rest of the public, we were surprised today to learn that a criminal complaint has been filed in Albany City Court by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office against Andrew Cuomo,” Soares said . “The Office of Judicial Administration has since made this file public. Our office will not comment further on this matter.”

In a statement, Cuomo’s attorney Rita Glavin denied the charges and questioned the integrity of Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.

“Governor Cuomo has never assaulted anyone, and Sheriff Apple’s motives here are clearly inappropriate,” Glavin said. “Sheriff Apple didn’t even tell the district attorney what he was doing.”

Apple told CNN it wasn’t surprised by Glavin’s claim.

“I would expect nothing less from this camp,” Apple said in a statement. “We get paid to protect people and help people, that’s exactly what we do.”

The complaint setting out the allegations was signed by Kowalski, an investigator in Apple’s office, and not by the sheriff. CNN has reached out to Kowalski for comment.

Cuomo has repeatedly denied the allegations of sexual misconduct against him, admitting he made mistakes, but still insisting that the more serious accusations were false. On August 3, New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report detailing repeated incidents of alleged sexual harassment by Cuomo, who left office a week after the investigation was made public. He was replaced by the lieutenant at the time. Governor Kathy Hochul.

The complaint says the allegations are supported by documents, including testimony found in the James Report by an anonymous woman, as well as cell phone recordings of the New York State Capitol entrance “sweeps” owned by to an anonymous person, New York State Police aviation records. by December 7, 2020, and a text from Cuomo’s phone.

In a statement Thursday, James described the charges against Cuomo as a justification for his office’s report, which Cuomo tried to discredit.

“From the moment my office received the request to investigate the allegations that former Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed several women, we proceeded without fear or favor,” said James. “Today’s criminal charges against Mr. Cuomo for forced touching further validate the findings of our report.”

Cuomo sought to portray the Attorney General’s investigation, which was led by a pair of outside investigators, as politically motivated. In remarks announcing his resignation, Cuomo thanked women who presented what he described as “genuine” complaints, but presented himself as the victim of a change in social norms he did not. understood.

“In my mind, I never crossed the line with anyone. But I didn’t realize how much the line had been redrawn,” Cuomo said at the time. “There are generational and cultural changes that I just didn’t fully appreciate. And I should have – no excuses.”
