Amazon warns employees must follow return-to-office mandate to get promotions

Amazon employees those who fail to adhere to the company’s return-to-power mandate could jeopardize their pursuit of promotions.
Amazon management recently added a requirement that employees being considered for promotion be in the office at least three times a week to comply with the company’s mandate that went into effect earlier this year, according to internal docs. ‘Amazon previously reported by Insider and CNBC.
The policy change now requires the approval of a vice president, rather than just a manager, to promote an employee who is not complying with the requirement to work from the office. Amazon managers and the company’s human resources team also monitor compliance by assessing an employee’s “promotion readiness” according to reports.
“Promotions are one of the many ways we support employee growth and development, and we consider a variety of factors to determine whether an employee is ready to move to the next level,” a spokesperson said. Amazon at FOX Business.

Amazon has a process in place for employees to request an exception to work abroad and said it was considering these requests on a case-by-case basis, as it did before the pandemic. Promotions for employees who do not regularly work in the office are also subject to additional management approval.

CEO Andy Jassy first announced in February that Amazon plans to ask its employees to return to the office at least three days a week as the company examines different work arrangements teams are using during the pandemic, including working entirely remote, hybrid with a few days of work per week and full-time in the office.

Jassy wrote in a letter to employees at the time that these factors “led us to conclude that we should return to the office together most days (at least three days per week).”
At the time, Jassy said the requirement to work in the office at least three days a week would have exceptions like the company’s. pre-pandemic politics allowed. However, he said such exceptions would be rare among the company’s staff.
“Of course, as was the case before the pandemic, there will always be certain roles (e.g. some of our salespeople, customer service, etc.) and exceptions to these expectations, but this will only be a small minority,” Jassy wrote.

Amazon’s return-to-office requirement took effect May 1, but the mandate was met with pushback from employees, with some protesting and more than 30,000 signing an internal petition this spring that was rejected by management.
The e-commerce giant employs more than 1.46 million people worldwide and has an office network that includes its home port in Seattle and its second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.
