All you need to know

Climate change, habitat loss due to deforestation, contamination of water bodies and poaching are causing several species to become endangered across the world. In an effort to celebrate, learn and take action to protect these endangered species, David Robinson, author, and the Endangered Species Coalition in 2006 established the third Friday in May as Endangered Species Day. . This year, Endangered Species Day would be celebrated on May 20.

What are the endangered species?

Endangered species are animals, insects, plants and even micro-organisms threatened with extinction. These species are still present but may not survive long unless action to protect them is taken urgently. When the last of the species is gone, they are gone for good.

Some of the endangered species are bald eagle, alligator, snow leopards, polar bear, Asiatic lion, and gray wolf among others.

Why is Endangered Species Day necessary?

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, at least 40% of animals, insects and plants are threatened with extinction in the world. To prevent the extinction of these species and create awareness, Endangered Species Day is observed.

The day is designed to help people come together to find innovative ways to solve environmental problems and save endangered species.

To mark the day, special events like bird walks, nature hikes, garden plantings, zoo clean-ups, aquarium events, wildlife wall tours, educational talks and webinars are hosted by wildlife sanctuaries, zoos, aquariums, gardens, schools, libraries, museums, community groups, non-profit organizations and individuals around the world.

How can you help save endangered species?

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, half of all species on the IUCN list are endangered due to human activities. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize mistakes and check bad practices that push endangered species towards extinction.

Here are the steps that can be taken at the individual level to save endangered species

1. Do not buy illegal wild products, such as ivory or leopard skin.

2. Learn about endangered species and raise awareness.

3. If you can, donate to a conservation group or wildlife/wildlife organization.

4. Plant trees.
