In his first public comments since cinematographer Halyna Hutchins accidentally shot on a movie set, Rust, New Mexico earlier this month, Alec Baldwin said Saturday, “She was my friend.”
The actor spoke to BackGrid, a “global celebrity news agency” in Vermont, where he was pictured having lunch with his wife.
“There are accidental accidents on set from time to time, but nothing like it,” Baldwin said. “It’s one in a billion, one in a billion.”
Baldwin’s wife Hilaria used her phone to film the remarks, often trying to stop her husband from speaking. Baldwin said he was speaking out for photographers to stop following his family. He also said he was “ordered” by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department not to discuss the case.
“A woman is dead,” he said. “She was my friend, she was my friend. When I got to Sante Fe to start filming, I took her to dinner.
The gunshot that killed Hutchins also injured the film’s director, Joel Souza.
Baldwin said he was “in constant contact” with Hutchins’ husband and that he was “very concerned” for the family.
“We were a very, very well oiled crew making a movie together when this horrible event happened,” he said.
Investigators said this week there was “some complacency” in the way guns were handled on the set of Rust, but it was too early to determine whether charges would be laid.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza noted that 500 rounds – a mixture of blank bullets, dummy bullets and suspected live bullets – were found.
“Obviously, I think the industry recently had a safety record,” Mendoza told reporters. “I think there was some complacency about this set, and I think there are safety issues that need to be addressed by industry and maybe the state of New Mexico.”
Baldwin, who was a producer on the film, learned that the gun he was handling was safe. Authorities confirmed that there was no footage of the shooting, which occurred during a rehearsal.
On Saturday, Baldwin said: “We look forward to the sheriff’s department telling us what their investigation has yielded.”
He also said he would welcome a discussion on eliminating firearms from film productions.
“The continued efforts to limit the use of guns on a set is something that interests me enormously,” he said.
