Since March 1, 2022, car manufacturers must include environmentally friendly statements on their advertising. A measure which should in particular encourage less use of the car.

Car advertisements do not seem to have changed, L.Bazizin, J.Coulais, N.Ramaherisson, N.Salem Z.Berkous, J.-M.Mier, V.Landolfini. However, when we look at them, a banner appears indicating “remember to carpool”, or “on a daily basis, take public transport”, or even “for short journeys, prefer walking or cycling”. These recommendations have been mandatory since 1er March for all automakers, which puzzles many consumers.

CO2 emissions must appear

For some, this measure becomes an opportunity to green their image. “It comes at a time when we were also prepared to highlight our most eco-responsible models”, assures Nathalie Hoffet, marketing director Audi France. These mentions should not blur the main message. CO2 emissions must also appear with their color code. Mandatory statements already appear in the field of food advertisements, such as “eat at least five fruits and vegetables a day”.
