ISLAMABAD – Activists targeted an army post in the tribal belt of northwest Pakistan near the Afghan border, killing a soldier in an overnight shootout, the Pakistani military said.
The attack took place in the Shewa region of North Waziristan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the army said in a statement on Saturday. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
The army said that during an intense exchange of gunfire, a soldier was killed. He said a search of the area was underway to find the militants. No further details were disclosed.
North Waziristan has served as a militant stronghold for decades. The army carried out a real offensive in the region after the attack on an army-run school in December 2014 in the provincial capital of Peshawar. The attack left more than 150 dead, most of them schoolchildren.
