According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office south of Asheville, a 911 call was made on Saturday around 2:30 p.m., reporting that a child had gained access to a gun and accidentally shot himself.
The child was airlifted to Mission Hospital and was undergoing medical treatment, spokesman Johnny Duncan told CNN on Sunday. An investigation is underway.
In 2020 in the United States, more than 5,100 children under the age of 18 were killed or injured in firearm incidents, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
