A group of middle schoolers in Rhode Island thought their teacher was a “creep” towards the girls in class.
They kept a “pedo database” of his classroom actions after adults ignored their complaints, according to The Boston Globe.
Now the “database” is part of an investigation into whether the teacher harassed a college student.
A group of middle schoolers in Rhode Island thought their teacher was a “creep,” so they kept a diary of all his inappropriate interactions with the girls in their class. Now the teacher is on administrative leave and is under investigation.
The group of boys from Davisville Middle School in North Kingstown started the ‘pedo database’ after seeing their teacher ogling the girls in their class, giving them nicknames like ‘sweetheart’ and ‘sunshine’, and asking them to dance for him, The Boston Globe reported.
When the group tried to report the situation, the adults didn’t take them seriously, one told The Globe. The teacher himself had even said that he had received complaints for decades without any action being taken against him, according to the Globe.
The Globe reported that a boy noticed how uncomfortable his female classmates were in class.
“Sometimes they laughed. Sometimes they just sat awkwardly,” the boy told the Globe. “Even those who said he was ‘scary’ laughed because they obviously weren’t trying to tease him or anything. So they’re just pretending to laugh, laughing awkwardly.”
After “other students noticed it too”, the group decided in January 2021 to create a “pedo database” on Discord to gather “evidence” of their behavior, according to the Globe.
“This is now the official chat that we will later use as evidence against (the teacher) about pedophilia in case something happens in the future and we are right,” one boy wrote in the group chat, depending on the globe.
When the classes went live due to the pandemic, they noted in the database when their teacher said, “You all love me, so choose love” and “You have to get up and dance now “. In another instance, he remarked that everyone should be “in bathing suits tomorrow.”
Once classes resumed at school, they followed when the teacher teased or flirted with the girls. He once asked a girl to take off her shoes and wiggle her toes, they told The Globe.
One boy told The Globe he felt bad for girls ‘because sometimes it feels like a humiliating thing’.
“He was playing a song and he was making it get up and dance,” the student added.
In April 2022, the teacher was escorted out of school and put on leave, according to the Globe. The acting superintendent said they were investigating allegations that the teacher harassed a pre-teen schoolgirl he was coaching and was inappropriate around other girls, the Globe reported.
The schoolgirl’s family, represented by attorney Timothy J. Conlon, said they reported the behavior to school officials and were met with “deliberate indifference,” the Providence Journal reported. The teacher was removed from coaching area middle schoolers only after the family threatened to impose a restraining order on him, the Globe reported.
Once the public was asked for information, one of the college boys told his mother about the “pedo database” and they contacted Conlon. The log has since been shared with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth, and Families, the state Department of Education, and the investigating attorney. about the school, according to the Globe.
“I never thought it would actually be used as evidence, but we always had it as if it was,” the boy, now 15 and enrolled in high school, told the Globe. “So I’m glad we did, even though it might have seemed a bit silly at times.”
A spokesperson for Conlon did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
