A car hits the Greenpoint restaurant, which is robbed the following night

GREENPOINT, Brooklyn (WABC) — Police are investigating two incidents at a Brooklyn family restaurant whose owners are struggling to recover, particularly after going through the hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first incident happened last Tuesday, when sibling owners Sandra and Wilson Lopez said a car drove through the outdoor seating area of ​​Mexican restaurant Friducha on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint.

This driver fled the scene, leaving a trail of destruction behind.

“It was open,” Sandra Lopez said. “Thank goodness no one was sitting there and none of my employees were doing anything there.”

Then, on Wednesday evening, two people broke into the restaurant, stealing money and causing further damage.

Sandra and Wilson Lopez, owners of the siblings, said the security cameras were broken, the camera housing was taken, the televisions were smashed and $200 was taken from the register.

“They came down and they broke the TV where you can see all the cameras,” Sandra Lopez said. “They also took the safe, which is there too. You can’t touch it because the police will come and check the fingerprints. But there was no money either… It’s really , really sad.”

The restaurant is a complete mess, and they’re worried because one incident after another.

“That’s all I have,” said Sandra Lopez. “We’ve been through a lot with COVID. We haven’t received any help with the money they were giving.”

They are now considering installing alarms.

“We put our hearts and our money into it,” said Sandra Lopez. “And to see that someone can take it away, it’s really sad and I was really scared.”

Police do not know at this time if the two incidents are related and the investigation is ongoing.

“It’s not a big business,” Sandra said. “It’s a small business. Everything they take means something, so we need to be better prepared now.”

Total property damage is estimated at over $1,500.
