1. Take the time to think
Before you set your New Year’s resolution, take some time to think about the past year. Ask yourself what you’ve learned, what you’ve accomplished, any mistakes you may have made, and ways you would like to grow in the year ahead.

2. Focus on smart goals
According to psychologist Peter Drucker, the more clearly defined your course, the easier it is to follow. When you make your “Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound” resolution, you are setting yourself up for success. For example, the resolution “I want to expand my savings account” is easier to approach if it looks like “I would like to add ten thousand dollars to my savings account by setting aside fifteen percent of my paycheck for a year. This makes it easier to track your progress. Plus, noticing your progress along the way arguably makes you more likely to keep going.

3. Take a balanced approach to health goals
New Years is often the time to make resolutions about health, especially weight loss. If you set the same goal at the start of each year and run out of steam in February, use 2022 to shake things up. There are many areas of health besides the physical. Consider improving your mental, emotional, or spiritual health.
4. Think about what brings you joy
If you’re not passionate about resolving, chances are you’re not making it a priority. Plus, there’s no rule that your resolution should focus on self-improvement. This year, think about what inspires you and how to bring more to your life.
