(CNN) – Fully vaccinated international travelers arriving in Sydney and Melbourne will no longer have to self-quarantine for 72 hours from Tuesday, December 21, Australian government officials said on Thursday.

In a joint statement, the premiers of New South Wales and Victoria said international travelers who are fully vaccinated will instead be required to show proof of a negative result of a Covid-19 PCR test in the three days after boarding their flight and another test 24 hours after arrival.

Travelers will be isolated until they test negative after arrival.

Travelers to New South Wales must also take a follow-up test six days after arrival. In Victoria, an additional test is required between the fifth and seventh day after arrival.

Passengers arriving from overseas to NSW and Victoria aged 18 and over who are not considered fully immunized should still go directly into mandatory hotel quarantine for 14 days, according to the press release.

The ease of the restrictions comes after New South Wales reported a daily record of 2,313 Covid-19 cases.

“Simplify the process”

New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet said the changes were intended to clarify the process for international travelers.

“We know international travel has been a difficult time with new rules and the emergence of the Omicron variant, but this announcement aims to simplify the process and ensure that Australia’s two largest cities have a consistent approach,” said Perrottet declared.

Victorian-era Acting Prime Minister James Merlino has said that with over 92% of Victoria’s population doubly vaccinated, the new policy will protect the community while helping them learn to live with Covid-19 .

“The Victorians have given themselves the best chance to live safely with the coronavirus and enjoy more freedoms this holiday season as we continue to monitor the Omicron variant,” Merlino said.
