A one-year-old girl was shot dead by an eight-year-old boy who found her father’s gun at a Florida motel.

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said the shooting took place on Sunday and the girl’s two-year-old sister was also injured in the incident.

Mr. Simmons said the boy’s father left the gun in the wardrobe of his motel room in Pensacola.

After leaving the room, her son found her and fired a bullet which went through and killed the child and hit the toddler.

The father was staying at the motel with a girlfriend, who was sleeping at the time, Mr Simmons said.

The girls killed and injured were his children, he said.

The toddler should recover.

The father was arrested for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, tampering with evidence, culpable negligence and failure to store a firearm safely, the sheriff said.

There were at least 392 unintentional shootings by children under 18 last year, with 163 deaths, according to advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, which tracks cases.
